Vacancies most Dutch banks, insurers and telecom not written for women

12 November 2020 – Arnhem

The job postings of most Dutch banks, insurance companies, telecom and IT companies still focus too much on male candidates. This is shown by research into online vacancies of companies in these sectors using gender-neutral language. Gender-neutral job postings are important to prevent exclusion and help companies get more female candidates to apply in an increasingly tight labor market.

Van Lanschot is a favourable exception among banks, as it is the only bank to apply 100% gender-neutral job postings. The major banks, however, follow at a considerable distance and mostly use texts that are too masculine. Companies in the investment market also seem to want to appeal to male candidates in particular with their job postings.

Among insurers, Menzis, Inshared and Zorg en Zekerheid stand out in a positive sense with 100% gender-neutral job postings. Most large insurance companies can still improve a lot. Even in the telecom sector, the job postings of many companies are still too masculine. Positive outliers here are Simyo and Lebara.

The research was carried out by text technology company Textmetrics, which regularly researches business sectors for the quality of (vacancy) texts. The research focuses on accessibility, discrimination, gender neutrality and language proficiency.

In order for companies to determine whether they are unconsciously discriminating on their company websites or in their job postings, Textmetrics has a ‘website inclusion check’. In addition, the company offers a recruitment platform with which it is possible to extract key words from (vacancy) texts and automatically make recommendations for improvements. The technology for this is based on big data, Natural Language Processing (NLP) and artificial intelligence. The platform also solves important issues such as conversion increase, findability increase and brand consistency.
